Being a Female, What is your Clothing Style?

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and believe me…it really sucks being a graphic designer on 14th February. Considering the overloaded work schedule and tedious deadlines, who can imagine enjoying a pleasant time with their valentine? This conundrum is widespread among graphic designers as I’ve heard many of my colleagues complain of this as well. But does this mean that designers can’t be anyone’s valentine?

Thinking about all this, a funny notion came to mind which inspired me into writing today’s post on why graphic designers can’t be an ideal valentine? You might remember my post from last year on similarities between client and valentine. Similarly, I wish to describe, in a lighter way, how certain qualities of designers can make them irritating on Valentine’s Day. I’m sure most of you will agree with these…so read along and have fun. :)

1. Bizarre Sense of Humor:

It is believed that designers have a weird sense of humor. They tell jokes that ONLY they would understand and enjoy. Since they are so much drenched in designing all the time, their jokes are also design-related. Imagine you’re out with a designer on a date and he cracks a joke on how he couldn’t move a layer in Photoshop because it was locked. You wouldn’t even know whether to laugh or feel sorry for him.

2. Designer Approach in Everything:

Other strange thing about a graphic designer is that he/she looks everything with design perspective. Whether it is cooking food or selecting household items, they handle everything like Photoshop or Illustrator. They would criticize the design of your dress and advise you to adjust your color contrast and crop the dress to look better. If you take long time while shopping, they would constantly keep reminding of time as if there was a deadline to complete shopping even :s

3. Love for CMYK:

One thing is certain about designers….they love CMYK. Their attraction for the color palette can become a nuisance for their valentine. For example, they will present you a rose and then describe what quadrants of the CMYK color bar it belongs to. Then they would start boring you by telling the history and significance of all the colors. Can you bear that, huh?

4. Sketches Your Problems:

Due to the habit of solving every problem with a sketch, graphic designers will sketch your problems too. Imagine you are sitting with your valentine, discussing your troubles. Your designer valentine will start visualizing your words and all the help you will get from him/her is a sketch showing you in your problems.

5. Bring Their Work on Dates:

If your date carries a laptop every time you go out, then you can be sure you are going out with a graphic designer. With stringent deadlines and overload of design work, designers can’t have quality time without completing their tasks. Imagine going to the cinema with your valentine, and he/she spends the whole time on his laptop or iPhone searching for the perfect concept for their design project.

6. Constantly Talk About Work:

A date with your valentine means spending quality time talking about each other and other romantic stuff. But in the case of a graphic designer, all you will get is constant blabber about their work. All the time, they would rant about how a client deceives graphic designers or how they accomplished a certain project in the nick of time. Pretty boring, isn’t it?

7. Clients are their 1st Preference:

Graphic designers can become paranoid when it comes to client business. For them, the number 1 preference is clients. They would sacrifice their family time to work for their clients. Always ready to cancel a date with their valentine for a meeting with their client. I mean, would you like to spend time with someone who constantly puts you on hold to talk to clients on other line? Certainly not!

8. Weird Ways of Expression:

As I described earlier, graphic designers have a weird sense of humor. Similarly, they have a strange way of expressing themselves too. The only way of expression that they know is through graphic design. They will express their love through e-cards and abstract Valentine’s Day designs and might even propose through a poster design. I mean, how lame is that?

9. They are Super Nerds:

Another thing commonly perceived about designers is that they are geeky and nerdy. They read so many boring books on graphic design that they would bore you to death. Moreover, you cannot afford to be spotted dating a nerd…can you?

10. Inappropriate Gifts:

Graphic designer’s sense of giving gifts is also a little out of the ordinary. To them, a beta version of the latest graphic design software is the ideal gift for them. Therefore, for others too they think of similar gifts. Imagine how would you feel if you receive a copy of the latest version of Adobe Photoshop on Valentine’s Day?

Whatever you read above, I have collected it from my experience and what I see around…but now it’s your turn. Have you ever been a Graphic Designers’ Valentine? Did you experience any of the above.. come on, let’s be frank guys ;)

Though developers have their own, weird habits, it sounds like I have to be glad that I’m not a graphic designer. Haha. Great post.
