The problem with “free logo design” is that you are not the only one using the image / clip art. This leads to confusion because your brand image is no longer the only one of its kind. Not to mention, you may be great at writing a business plan, but you have no experience what-so-ever when creating a company’s brand identity. Would you hire a dog walker to work on your Ferrari? No. You’d hire a professional.
The effort to get something-for-nothing turns out to be very costly because it requires a COMPLETE overhaul of your brand identity and ALL of its marketing materials when you realize that someone else has used the same image / clip art.
Hire a graphic designer who specializes in identity design. It’s worth the expense and is also a legitimate write-off on your business taxes.

It is so wrong to plug this site on a Graphic Design blog. This goes completely against what we do as professionals, discouraging clients from hiring designers. Just as bad as those “logo contests” on craigslist. We, as designers, need to speak up for our profession not against it. But i agree w/ AJ, in the end, you get what you pay for…

Original design will always be welcomed. And there is the copyright law as well. So getting a logo or any artwork designed in a unique way will always be welcomed by clients. But free graphics can always act as starting point for designers. Templates, samples and already created art can always act as sources of inspiration for creating better art and not for copying outright.

Are you crazy! Why would you encourage this kind of cheap design that puts your own colleagues out of business. By supporting this type of design you are cheapening the art, the research & the creative/intellectual process of logo design & brand identity. Not to mention websites like this one downgrade the importance of actually having a logo and an identity because A. anyone can now make up their own B. there is often no intellectual substance to these logos & C. these are mass produced meaning you eventually have people using clip art as logos WHICH DEGENERATES THE WHOLE PROCESS!!!!!! People, everyone is allowed to express themselves (and try to save some $$ in the process, after all this is a recession), but lets not call ground chuck a sirloin. Just because it exists does not mean it is good.

I completely agree with VERONICA and AJ. Clip art should never be used to create a business identity. Every business is unique and deserves to have a unique and personal face.

I’ll be honest, I hate doing logo design. It’s hard. A site like this is a good starting point, even for me. I usually get really inspired most by frustration and hatred for the mediocre. Logos don’t come to me like they do for some people. A lot of staring into space is involved in my creative process on that.
A site like this is fine for a small business just starting out. A lot of these people really honestly don’t have money to hire a real designer. Once they get going and want to expand and become a real company, then they’ll hire a designer.
Sites like this aren’t going to replace designers, if anything it will help them a great deal: Let’s face it, you don’t want a stingy client that thinks your job is a joke and WANTS their identity to be clip art anyway. Real businesses understand your real business and that hiring you is hiring experience in not just what looks pretty, but an understanding of what can make or break their business.

Craigslist is a phenomenal resource when looking for free logo design. Many designers, whether they’re fresh out of college or seasoned pros, check the listings to build their portfolios. Many designers are finding themselves low on work since the economy tanked, so they have recently been more willing to pick up pro bono work. College students are excellent resources of fresh talent, many of whom need to build their portfolio.
Live in a small town? Post to major cities like NY, Chicago, and LA where designers are abundant.
Good luck!
