A Redesigned logo has two extreme results…either it adds to the worth of a company or takes away the hard earned reputation. If your redesigned corporate identity is weak, prepare yourself to welcome the downfall of your brand but luckily you get it right, it can open new doors of success for you. I have put together an exciting collection of 25 logos that have gone through major redesign in the year 2009. Moving from left to right you will notice the transformation and if you think I have missed mentioning any major redesign, I will really appreciate your contribution. |
|
| Question of the Post!! | |
|
|
| 1 ) Carrefour: Since 1966, Carrefour, a French supermarket chain has been consistent with its C-in-a-diamond icon and bold fonts. Well, now you will see it with a new word mark and a slightly modified icon. | |
![]() |
|
| 2 ) Audi: Audi revealed a simplified logo that gave a new shine to the four connected rings, from a matte finish to a more chromalicious one. | |
![]() |

|
![]() |
|
| 5 ) MasterCard Logo: The old symmetry logos have been replaced with a trio of spheres, with the centre sphere being blurred and brown. | |
![]() |
|
| 7 ) Kraft foods: With the beginning of this year Kraft foods introduced a completely new corporate identity but few months back it further modified its redesigned logo. | |
![]() |
|
| 8 ) Discovery Kids With changing the letter “I” into exclamation mark and changes to“S”, it is delivering a fun loving impact |
|
![]() |

![]() |
|
| 9 ) Jack in the box: Duffy & Partners has added a new funky and lively appeal to the famous fast food chain “Jack in the box” logo. | |
![]() |
|
| 10 ) Videocon: India-based Videocon, one of the largest consumer products in its country, has released its new” V” icon which has become instantly become a recognizable shape. However, the typography, looks out of date and clashes doesn’t compliments the icon. | |

![]() |
|
| 12 ) Hertz Logo: The shadow and the sloopy look of the logo has been replaced with stiff typeface, adding curve to letter "r" | |
![]() |
|
| 13 ) Union bank of California: The famous California bank logo has emerged with a dominating letter “U” with its swooping feel adding strength and personality to the services of the bank. | |
![]() |
|
| 14 ) SGI Logo: The typeface of Silicon Graphics, Inc was always considered weird with their hybrid rounded and flat edges. In contrast, the new logo is, simply flat without any exciting feel. | |

![]() |

![]() |
|
| 17 ) City of Melbourne: With their new identity that will represent the City of Melbourne, and provided plenty of rationale behind the new identity replacing a logo designed in the early 1990s. |
|
![]() |
|
| 18 ) Network Solutions: The pioneer of domain registration world, network solutions has come up with a prominent and loopy redesign, with the folds adding motion to the redesign. | |
![]() |
|
| 19 ) My little pony: The brand has kept experimenting with its design and packaging for more than 25 years but the long swaying “Y” in the latest version is irritating. | |
![]() |
|
| 20 ) Doctor Who: Lately, BBC unveiled the new logo for the longest-running science fiction program, showcasing a massive DW monogram in a tightly spaced slab serif. | |
![]() |
|
| 21 ) Lays: I know this should be called a package redesign rather than a logo redesign. However, it is giving a complete new look to the product so I thought it should be on the list too. | |
![]() |
|
| 22 ) Chicken Now: With their recent Popeyes work, has helped them to rename and rebrand their popular (in the Southwest, at least) retail offering. And now for some Chickenow. |
|
![]() |
|
| 23 ) Blimpie Logo: Famous for its sub sandwiches, Blimpie has always used component of fun and liveliness in its logo but the new emblem is very boring and generic. | |
![]() |
|
| 24 ) Sony Ericson: Well, don’t be shocked with Sony Ericson on the list because it has not changed the logo but has released its logo in some electrifying colors. | |
![]() |
|
| 25 ) Mtv: Avoiding a drastic change, that it becomes hard to recognize, MTV has come up with a refreshing rebranding. The logo remains black on a white ground – no color, pattern or texture to decorate it. | |
![]() |
|
| In the end, I would like to offer special thanks to “Brand New” a famous website responsible for updating redesigning of corporate brands. | |

Cool, I think I got some inspiration for the logo on my site now. Thanks!
-
In my opinion, the best change are the one of Videocon and Chickenow, and the worst one is the Mastercard.
Ps: the old Good humor logo seems to be pretty popular amongst designers – totally looks like (is): http://www.seeklogo.com/images/A/Algida-logo-3330EAAC11-seeklogo.com.gifand

Great list…some are much better than others, but I think there is an overall trend toward simplicity…which is good! Just not sure about that Mastercard redesign.
-
Funny thing about the updated Playstation 3 logo. it’s the same exact style as the original PS2 and PSP logos. Just got back in line with everything else.

very interisting!

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for including the new Network Solutions logo on your list. As with any rebranding effort, we received mixed reviews about it but looks like more and more people seem to like the new look and feel. @netsolcares thanks you for making it to the redesigned logos of 2009 list!
Regards,
Shashi Bellamkonda
-
Great info dude!!
-
With very few exceptions it seems like a massive waste of time and money to redesign what in most cases are perfectly fine logos. I’ve met a number of people who seem to be logo obsessed. not sooner do they get one than they start redesigning it. Their focus should be on actually delivering a great product…
-
Mastercard and Jack in the box what are you thinking? Really disappointing designs. I prefer the original and iconic look. I recognize it, which means I know it, which means it gets my attention. The new signs don’t carry much of the nostalgia tribute.
-
Great post. I love the Nickelodeon logo changed most. =)
-
Thank you for sharing this collection of redesigned logos of 2009
-
great over view of logo changes. i some have made the right move to re brand itself etc. video con in particular catches my eye. have seen the logo in may adverts and always thought it was an impressive modern expression of the original. less edgy and more viable. the general consensus seems to me smoother lines and edgier colours as opposed to the more acceptable subtle applications of the past! brilliant piece of information though!
-
Some are cool, but i think that some should remain…lets say for “Audi”’s font type…personally i think the old 1 looks better and brings out more character of the brand. The new “mastercard” logo is not working for me as it seems more complicated now. The old one is just simple and nice.
-
The Good Humor logotype isn’t one that is copied.
The heart component is used globally for many the same ‘brand’ per se, it is just the brand name that changes in their different markets, whether it be Frigo or as it is in Australia Streets
It’s all about ice cream.
-
The rebranded logos that resonate the most with me are the one that are keeping it simple. Audi’s new logo is clean and fresh, while Mastercard’s new logo is complicated and kind of confusing.
The lesson we should all take away from these redesigns? Keep it simple.

I love the redesign of Jack In The Box! They do such great work at Duffy & Partners. The animated version of the logo fits the brand very well too.
And I agree with Kian… The Mastercard logo became too complicated in the process of redesigning. But I love the City Of Melbourne logo.
-
Thank you for sharing.
-
Loved the new colors of Sony Ericsson. Thumbs down to Master Card.
-
Hi, excellent post, i love Doctor Who logo. It’s cool men. How I wish to design my own logo too.
-
Good Humor logo, isnt that the wall’s ice cream logo!??
-
Seems like a lot of these (if not all) have been lifted off http://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/
Make sure to credit the source.
-
It’s a great post, so inspirational.
Thanks to share it!
-
The new MasterCard logo is awful! All I can think is that it’s accidentally asymmetrical.
I really like the new Dr Who, PS3, and Jack in the Box. All three look new yet recognizable.
The huge “Baked” on the potato chips makes me think of smoking pot. Maybe that’s what they were going for? Munchies, anyone?
-
This is a really interesting article. It just goes to show that updating your brand identity is always a good idea.
-
minimalism!!! Yes, it’s all about simplicity! Thanks for sharing!
-
great blog! thanks Alejandro from argentina
-
I think all are much needed improvements, minus Master Card and Blimpie. Master Card could use improvements but only to the degree that Audi has. Blimpie, I’m just disappointed in. The old Blimpie logo really works for me.

I like the fact that with most of these designs a much simpler design was chosen. Simple and clean seems to be the trend, which is hopefully how it will stay.
Shashi — The network solutions logo is great. I think that’s is a great improvement.
-
Isn’t MasterCard Worldwide (on the right), the corporate logo that has been updated, not the MasterCard brand logo (on the left)? Confusing huh?
-
The redesign of Chicken Now to Chickenow is pretty awesome. I like the simplicity
-
All the logos are good but i think Videocon did a good job. Very slight changes in some logos.
-
Extremely good piece of info!
-
Amazing list! I like videocon’s new logo is good… I think designers have a lot of scope as companies are redesigning their website layouts and logos these days.
-
Yes, the first Chicken Now logo was better
-
Cool Collection of redesigned logos… The Videocon logo has two parts to combine and form a V and they have even launched an animated ad with those two symbols being the main characters lol

I disagree with the critique of the My Little Pony logo. Though I do not have great love for it, the “irritating” new letter y seems to evoke a pony’s tail. So there is some meaning to the change.
-
Thanks for the credit in the resource box. I think that the best logo redesigns are evolutions and not complete redesigns. No one wants to lose a ton of brand equity. How minor of a change depends on what you have to work with. Great post and thanks again.
-
[...] Thanks to Systemic Adrian for sending these my way! The redesigns of a bunch of logos from 2009. From Mastercard to Doctor Who, I must say I’m 50-75% against most of the redesigns. Thanks for the great post! I agree, several of these could have stayed the same. ESPECIALLY Mastercard. What a hideous logo!

Hi All…It’s a pleasure to see that you enjoyed looking at these redesigned logos of top brands.
@ VA…that’s right my friend that many of the redesigns showcased here have been selected from underconsideration.com but my friend I haven’t missed to link them. I have linked it on top in the resource box.
@ CRYSTAL WALKER…I agree with your opinion about the new MasterCard logo…it’s awful.
@ RODNEY FARAON…yeah, I saw that the swaying letter “Y” in the “My Little Pony” signifies the pony tail but I think it did not add much grace to the logo.
@ Audee…The Chickenow simplicity is truly remarkable.
I am glad that you all liked the collection but come on guys…send in other redesigns to add to the list.
-
The Mastercard one is awful.
-
Wow, I don’t like the Blimpie or MasterCard logo at all. I’m surprised the Pepsi logo didn’t make it onto this list.
-
I like all the logos. It shows you are hard work and creativity. Very nice work. Keep it up.
-
i really enjoyed the jack in the box logo though i wish they could have taken the “in the box” off the bottom but i know there are some people that wouldnt get it. And my least fav was the master card (WHY?!) i mean ok if it could be explained cool but just looking at it its too much.
-
Melbourne and Jack in the Box have given a much needed new beginning to their brands. Well done.
MasterCard?! What?! At first I thought it a watermark on the logo image or a mistake. Ugh. Concept poorly executed.
Playstation. It’s about time. Whenever I saw it the first thing I thought of was the logo for the Spiderman movies.
Nick reduced it’s logo from something that was infinitely adaptable and fun to just another corporate logotype. I’m sure kids will love it though…

The Firefox logo is one of the most widely recognized brand marks in the technology world. It’s a powerful symbol of everything that Mozilla stands for.I imagine the 2009 firefox logo is in good health and it is free of cost to use and download as well. The browser is real real great…
-
The New Doctor Who logo is incomplete. Without the rest of it it doesn’t show the TARDIS design, and doesn’t look as good.
-
Nice collection. We can see that the majority of the logos are going towards the path of simplification. This teaches us that the good old rules of logo design will never change and a simple logo will always be more powerful than pyrotechnics. Logo design is a complex science, and not everyone has the eye for it. Great post.
-
Nice post! You need to add pepsi’s new logo too!

City of Melbourne one is interesting…I question its longevity though.
Its very reflective of Federation Square and much of Melbourne’s modern street sculpture art
-
I love this! Thanks for putting it together. I’m not a fan of the new Doctor Who one. And I agree with you about Blimpies subs.
LOVE the Audi one
-
Mastercard is JACKED. JackInTheBox is sweet, it grows on ya. Mtv and Firefox are,…why bother? Looks like it always has. You really wanna call reverting to your original logo “new” MTV?…please. Also REALLY like Melbourne cuz it be so funky with the lines and angles. Thank you and good night!
-
In my ever so ‘umble opinion…
Good (A step forward, an improvement)
Audi, Firefox, Interbank, Jack in the Box, Videocon, Hertz, Union Bank (there’s a B in the device as well as a U), City of Melbourne, Network Solutions, Playstation 3, My Little Pony, Chicken Now, Sony Ericsson.Bad (Sorry guys, it’s not as good as the one it’s replaced) Mastercard (appalling!) Good Humour (This is Walls in the UK right?)Blurpie (err… where’s the personality gone?) SGI (ditto – it’s lost it’s mojo). MTV (ok, so you’ve gone back to basics, you’ve made it clearer but lost the fun and funkiness that were part of your brand. Fail.)
Meh… (Why bother, or well it’s ok… but not a significant improvement… go away and do it again) Carrefour (I wonder how much they paid for THAT), Kraft foods (ditto), Dicovery Kids (Dream brief… could do better!) Nickleodeon (kinda like it. But still like the old one), Doctor Who (again, could do better!).
Great collection, btw, well collated.
-
I just don’t see how such a huge entreprise as Mastercard has changed its logo into such a messy and blurry concept.
-
Interesting collection, was a tad surprised to see IKEA’s changes left out.
I agree with the trend to a minimalist style, but do not think it is because the companies want to be minimalist in terms of design per se. I think the bottom line is simply the bottom line – they want to save money. Just look at all the ‘free’ sites out there, the usage of different fonts etc. only complicates things!
With few exceptions above, this is clearly illustrated. Others are just plain terrible (see MC comments above). But that’s nothing new either.
-
well..it can be! but before make a logo should corporate the subject of that company by color,,shape, typography and arrengement to built a special identity first.you can try more….
-
very interesting and very useful..thanks for sharing with us…ur site simply rocks
-
It’s really funny that the SMALLEST of changes (like the Firefox one) can make all the difference in the world for a logo! Just a little touch up here and there, and voila! It’s suddenly stunning!
Great post man, keep it up!
-
New Mastercard Logo = sick joke.
it looks horrible. Worst logo ever. Boooo! mastercard. What the heck is that thing?

In my opinon, the great one of this list is MTV. Cuz’ it back to basic, that’s all.

-
I like the Mastercard changes most
-
Michaels the arts and crafts store changed their logo too! I believe it was in 2009.
-
I think you are mistaken with Viacom’s MTV logo. MTV corporate has never strayed from it’s original design by George Lois. Variations and embellishments were allowed for on air promos, presskits and online use. The dichotomy can be seen on MTV’s site mtv.com everytime you reload the page. (note the logo in the cycling background vs the one in the header)
-
I think too many of these changes are playing catchup. But Jack in the Box is a quantum leap – it’s 3-dimensional, iconic and as you see on the commercials, it spins. Very forward-thinking.
-
Videocon new identity is good, with mastercard the earlier one was appealing.
-
The first GOOD HUMOR logo is the same of the italian most famous ice cream factory called ALGIDA
take a look:
-
It ought to be noted that the MastCard logo is for the parent company, MasterCard Worldwide and not at the product/card level. While the jury is still out for me on this redesign, I think as a branding guy, I find it incredibly important to consider purpose behind the design and where the identity will live. In this case, at a strictly corporate level, it might work and the I am guessing that there was purpose in creating some level of separation. It’s really and architecture solution that may or may not have been necessary. If it was to appear on my card, I might be more concerned.

Great collection – thanks!
and while some are slight slight changes where the untrained eye might not notice – some are pretty drastic! not sure i can get used to the new mastercard logo … i guess considering it has been the same thing for so long. Not sure Kraft can make up its mind! hahah. Some Great changes: Videocon, Lays, chickenow. Preferred old Good Humor one… almost seems the new one looks older that the previous one!
-
I do agree that minimalism is the key to new logo design. I do have an opinion on one of logos that I strongly disagree on with it’s new format. The new MasterCard logo is awful, why take something that was so icon originally and put a horrible brown shape in the middle of it…it seems to me that they have changed to show that they are changing with times but it all seems like they have took a step back.
-
I’m just happy to see a redesign for Dr.Who… that logo they came out with for the new series was horrible.

Sorry for Mastercard – the new one is just worse.
Videocon, Good Humor, Union Bank, Coty of Melbourne – all these are totally new logos, only the name is the connection.
-
Blimpie’s new logo is not just boring and genering…the kerning is also off
-
Great article. I admire some of the simplifications to some of the logos, namely Kraft Foods and Hertz. I have yet to see Mastercard’s new logo in action- possibly because I’m mildy inept.
My vote goes to Videocon for best refresh!
-
Thanks for bringing these logos together for us. It is good to see what is happening in the design world.
-
Really nice selection. Some Logos got better. But I like the old “jack in the box” logo better.
-
REGARDING: AUDI LOGO
I LOVE THE CHROME TOUCH, BUT I DONT KNOW ABOUT THE TEXT PLACEMENT. IT DOESNT FEEL RIGHT. MAYBE SHRINK IT. IDK
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
-
Everyone i do logos for now wants minimalist and I am cool with it. Many times I think it looks much nicer. When someone does a complicated logo and can pull it off, that is always refreshing for me.
Hated the Mastercard, nickelodeon and Jack In The Box re-designs. Nickelodeon … terrible.
-
I agree on the Audi logo. Needs to be a little smaller and moved up.
-
WOW… did Blimpie really change their logo to that garbage. WOW
Why would Jack In The Box change their logo to the pay 99 dollar online logo? Wow again
-
I don’t think Mastercard realizes how much of an icon they had. They went from highly recognizable logo to a blur of circles.
-
Eliza, the Pepsi redesign happened in mid-late 2008.
-
One of the most redesigned logo’s is definetly Pepsi logo. But, your quite right, Rusell. I think Mastercard didn’t realize what recognizable logo they had.

Music Television is gone from the MTV logo recently I think. Must have something to do with less (good)music and more crap like Jerky Shore.

My favorite is #21 Baked Lays. Very telling of the times. No more sunbursts seen so much this decade (i’m guilty of overusing them). Instead of a burst, it uses plain white space with a soft colored coloring. This new design is so very 2010. While the previous one is so last decade.
-
Wow, that new Mastercard logo is awful! Jack in the Box, Chickenow and Melbourne are great. I like the old Union Bank better and Kraft sucks both before and after. I like the concept behind Good Humor, but it needs work.
-
Blimpie you idiot. This is a perfect example of design by committee. When will companies realize they are dictatorships. I would not even notice them now, nothing to look for. You know, Blimpie they have the Formata Black font… Epic fail.
