There is another hidden message in Google’s TCP/IP logo.
There are “SYN SYN ACK ACK” letters written with confetti. There are underneath “2 0 0″ letters.

SYN and ACK are TCP/IP protocol instructions. Check them out.

    Great article!

Hey. very good list and nice stuff you got there.

However, you left a very very important one.

It’s the new logo for the London Museum. Who, at first glance, looks like a bunch of colored/transparent shapes on top of each other. But with some research, you realize that each shape is the shape of what London looked like once. The entire logo represents the evolution of the land of London through time.

You can’t get better than that.

Yes, I had noticed on the Tobleron candy logo a profile of a womans face licking and taking a huge bite out of the chocolate mountain that she is in. First find the bear then look at the bear’s left (right in relation to you) ear as her one eye in the profile and the bears left ear as her right ear and the bear’s left paw is her tongue stretched out to lick b4 the big bite. Can you see her flowing hair?

  1. Ken Peters On May 3rd, 2009 at 12:21 pm

If there is an arrow between the “E” and “x” in FedEx, there you must also acknowledge the spoon evident in the negative space of the “ed” in Fed. What does that have to do with fast, reliable, overnight delivery?

The arrow gets lost in the mess of negative space created by the overall mark. It’s too weak of a visual cue to zero in on as a compelling element of the logo.

  1. Pariah Burke On May 3rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm

  1. Voytec On May 3rd, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Ok… to much analyzing of the Toblerone logo – it is not a bear … it is just a graphic depicting a Swiss landmark – the Matterhorn mountain…

    Superb article. Thanks!

    2 suggestions, though:

    1) There’s a typo under the Lafayette logo (as Antonin BOIN has already commented). The “C’est magnificique!” should spell: “C’est magnifique!”

    2) The Toblerone logo does not show some “Swiss Alps”, but exactly the Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French). And it’s actually on the border between Switzerland (the Valais canton) and Italy and quite far from Bern (by Swiss standards).

@eric: there is no such town as tobler here in switzerland. tobler is the name of the inventor of the toblerone, that again is a composite word of tobler and torrone. look latter up on wikipedia if you’re interested. also, bern is not only RUMOURED to etymologically derivate from bern but that fact is very clear for long already.

Living in Eagan, MN, headquarters of Northwest Airlines (up until Delta bought them out), I’ve seen that logo a lot. I could see the “N” and the “W”, but it never dawned on me that the little triangle was pointing northwest on the circle. ;-) Awesome. Kinda makes me want to fly north by Northwest one last time before they all go Delta. ;-) (Not that one can guarantee the livery of the plane anyway. The gates all say Delta now, though their big hangar off I-494 still has the NW logo as depicted in this blog post.)

Of course, there’s a sinister second possible reason for that triangle. There have been rumors of a Delta merger for *years*, and of course, the logo redesign took out the N, leaving only the northwest-pointing triangle. Delta, of course, is a triangle. And in the end, that’s who ended up buying the oldest passenger airline in North America.

******THE****** logo with the most hidden messages I’ve ever seen — and done very, very well, mind you — is that of the Presbyterian Church. Check it out here:

    http://www.davidairey.com/images/logos/presbyterian-logo-2.gif

Done by Malcolm Grear and Associates, it’s a true masterpiece of simplifying complexity. You think your logos have hidden messages, they have nothing on this one.

  1. Dave Byrd On May 18th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Check out Mammoth Mountain ski resort’s logo from California — I thought for sure it would be on here. It conveys the M for Mammoth Mountain, the whooly Mammoth which gives the resort it’s name, all the way down to the trunk and tusks.

Letters is a perfectly cromulent word to use.

Northwest Airlines is my all-time favorite logo. As you said the small arrow in the upper left of the circle forms the W from the N and it also points to the direction northwest (compass like)

  1. xofer On May 18th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

I loved the old Northwest Airlines logo – the compass symbol was perfect. What confused me is when they changed logos in 2003 and went with ‘nwa’.
Didn’t anyone google this? I laughed recalling the late 80’s rap group ‘N*ggaz With Attitude’ who went by NWA.

Also – the compass worked – only when it didn’t

Hi all…although I made a special post to thank you all for your overwhelming reponse on this post.

@ Ziggy Pop…I am sorry dude if you don’t like my using the word “alphabet”. I will make it sure that I use the term “letter” now ownwards.

@ P Duggan…I totally agree. It was really creative of you to remind of Prebyterian Church (USA)s logo with so many things packed at the same time in that logo.

@ Wayne…you are right that the “VIA” Logo shows the same when seen upsdie down.

@ Jm…it was nice of you to like the list but don’t you think commentary on these logos was important especially for logos like “Piano Forest” and”Toblerone” logo.

@ EnergonCube….I totally agree with you on the “Church Logo”. Surely, you will find that logo on top of the list in the sequel post.

@ Alex…I ddi not add “Sun Microsystem ” logo thinking it very much obvious to most of the people uptil now…don’t you think so?

@ TRoy, Jess, Familytents, Mokokoma Mokhonoana and JoyLogoDesign….I thank all of you for aapreciating the research put in for compiling this list.

However, I expect to see you all once again comenting on the second part of this post. You will get to see lot more logos with hidden messages including all the recommended logos by you all.

The Hartford Whalers logo was also used for their AHL farm team, the Binghamton Whalers. The logo was rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise, forming a “B” while still being easily identifiable.

  1. Dane On May 20th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

some of these logos are great, yet others really seem uninspired and frankly, quite boring. The horror films one is in my opinion, garbage. Same goes for the Big 10 and the Marriage one. And honestly, do you really find the ‘v’ in the Logo Review Logo “amazing!!”? For a site that critiques others logos they really ought to try and garner some credibility with a good logo themselves.
I like the Yoga one but I would think it would lack usability due to its proportions…
The other logos for the most part were great.

Indeed a great post. And I must be honest I hadn’t noticed the following:
    - Toblerone
    - FedEx
    - Via Rail (and I am in Canada)
    - Big Ten

The others I had noticed or had never seen the logo.

    Great job.

The art of marketing someone is to convey your message to the subconscious mind while the conscious mind is busy.
These logos brilliantly display this art.
It is subtle and therefore powerful, it is the hand under the Mona Lisa concept.

Regarding the Toblerone logo bear in the mountain – it could also be a woman with her mouth open and a piece of chocolate going into her mouth! (as you are looking at it, the right ear of the bear is her eye and the chest area of the bear is her open mouth, his nose is her nose, his front paws her chin and his underneath her neck.) Or maybe it is just my imagination! GREAT ARTICLE!! Thanks.

  1. Lilmama On August 13th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I noticed in the FUGA logo…that not only does the white space spell out the four lettered company name…but that each of the colored blocks surrounding them form a letter from the name also… the brown block surrounding the white F is an upper case G, the orange block surrounding the white U is a U, the brown block surrounding the white G is a lower case A, and the orange block surrounding the white A is an upper case F. I though that was interesting…

I’m surprised this group has neglected one of the most brilliant, and subliminal, logos ever created. And it was done nearly 40 years ago! Check out the logo for Round Table Pizza, named for the King Arthur legend and the knights of the Round Table. Their logo incorporates three flags reminiscent of medieval tribal banners that very subtly spell out the word “FUN”.

Very interesting and intriguing site. However, it causes the picky side of me to engage. This is a sign that is convincing me more and more that the state of the educational community (K thru Post-Grad collegiate) is rapidly accelerating toward total illiteracy. Plurals of words just gain and “s”. Possessive cases use an apostrophe. The apostrophe (‘) is also used to indicate dropped (eliminated) letters. The dogs are running. The dog’s tail is wagging. The dog’s hungry.

When tuned on their side, the word “Cola” in older coca cola logos clearly repesent a sketch of a head snorting cocaine. The first C, in “Coca” is a silver and white line that leads past the chin (the C in “Cola”) and goes straight into the nostril (the “O” in “Cola”. It then blasts out of the top of the head (between the “L” and “A” of “Cola” – which looks like a hat.

Many logos are very simple but they leave a great impact of on the eye just because of a balanced composition and suitable color combination. As we can see in a lot Logos there’s no additional graphical touch. We find Only plain back ground and text. So, it’s just how well do u play with Fonts. In all of them I like ‘FEDEX’ design the most.

  1. ed On October 2nd, 2009 at 10:29 am

I think there’s a lot more to the Fedex logo than just the arrow:

    1. The e and d form 2 wheels, with the horizontal line in the e connecting the 2 wheels.
    2. The arrow points to an ‘X’, thus “marking the spot”.
    3. The capital E can also be seen as airport terminals.
    4. The blue represents dusk and orange represents dawn.
    4. Put all together, it describes their business.

There are two New York/New Jersey-area logos I’ve found ingenious. The first is the logo for the PATH train, which you can see at http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/images/2008/01/18/pathlogo.jpg, and a version without the NY/NJ included is at: http://www.emergency.com/media/path_logo.jpg (The name “PATH” is itself an acronym for Port Authority Trans-Hudson, since the Hudson River is the river crossed when trains travel between the two states.)

The second is the logo for Pizza 33, a pizzaria on 33rd Street in Manhattan, which uses the “33″ as the double-z in the word “Pizza” in its name: http://blog.seamlessweb.com/seamlesswebcom-blog/2009/5/29/todays-order-pizza-33.html

  1. Lenithius On January 25th, 2010 at 5:47 am

There is also another sumliminal in FedEx the whole of it creates the image of a truck and the arrow dictates movent in a forward direction.. truely genious..

  1. bob On January 25th, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Love the amazon logo. The arrow says so much. It’s like a tagline inside a logo. Super cool.

As mentioned by others, the VIA logo can be viewed right-side-up or up-side-down, but I think the subliminal message there (ie. in addition to the train tracks worked into the logo) is that VIA Rail will always keep you “coning and going”
