Never has it happened that you visit slideshare.net and don’t come across any interesting slideshow of your choice. Although I went up there looking for some material on redesigned logos but stumbled across this interesting presentation by shawncalvert titled “What is Graphic Design”. It does a great job sharing all the aspects of Graphic Design in an unusual way.
So, which of these is your reply? I know it’s difficult to define Graphic Designing by choosing among any of these choices. So why don’t you flick over these slides to help you find the answer. Don’t miss to check slides 26 and 27 where great people like “Paul Rand” and “Jessica Hellfand” speak the wonders of graphic designing in true words. |
| I am sure, by now you must have realized how assertively our lives are decorated with graphics. So, after enjoying the slideshow, how would you answer “What is Graphic Designing?” Do write in which of the above given options you have chosen and why…till then, take care!! |

Had you asked me the question, and not shown the slide show… I would have answered that Graphic Design is “commercial art” that is used as a form of “visual communication”. I’m going to stick to that response.
I’ve heard the statement “I chose to do graphic design over visual arts, because I wanted to do something that’s creative and earn some money”… which was partly my attitue when I chose a path of education.
So… it is art is an way, but it’s commercial in the sense that each design is created with the intent to market a service/product and therefore make that company some cash. Where visual art can be self indulgent and may not be about making money.
I also say graphic design is “visual communication” because designs need to “speak” to the target demographic - instantly communicating what the product/service is, and who it is for.
In my opinion, all designers should know the demographic they are designing for - otherwise you will not achieve the right message.
History come into play when one considered approach and style; visual art skills can be adopted to create design elements; Advertising is just one of the many fields that graphic design is used in; A profession it is - but I would never define graphic design that way; and a set of computer skills does not make you a good graphic designer… thought/ideas is what make a strong visual communication campaign.
That’s my say
